Migrants were pictured today crammed shoulder-to-shoulder on an overloaded inflatable dinghy as they attempted the latest dangerous crossing of the English Channel in freezing winter conditions.

Dramatic images show dozens of people sitting along the sides of the low-slung boat, many wearing dark clothing and life jackets, as it cut across the grey sea towards Britain.

Other photographs capture chaotic scenes in shallow water, with migrants tumbling from the vessel as they reached shore.
