For two years, one weight-loss injection did something no drug in history had managed: it made a single company worth more than the entire country it came from. Novo Nordisk — a 100-year-old Danish insulin maker — passed LVMH to become Europe's most valuable company, then kept climbing to roughly $570 billion. Denmark's entire annual economy was about $405 billion. Strip the pharmaceutical industry out of Denmark's 2023 growth and it doesn't just shrink — it goes negative. The country's central bank held interest rates below the rest of Europe, partly to stop one company's success from overheating the krone. And when a US Senate investigation asked why Americans were paying $1,349 a month for a drug that cost about $92 in Britain, the company's own CEO was called to Washington to answer for it. Then the molecule had a bad day. A trial missed its number, the stock lost nearly 20% before lunch, and within a year Novo was down 53% — back to roughly what it was worth before any of this began. In September 2025 it announced 9,000 job cuts, 5,000 of them in Denmark. Economists have a name for what happened here. They call it the Nokia risk. This is the story of how a nation's prosperity got welded to a single molecule — and what happened when that molecule faltered. Denmark didn't get rich from a weight-loss drug. It got rented to one. 0:00 The Injection That Outgrew a Country 0:37 Semaglutide: One Molecule, Two Blockbusters 1:02 Novo Nordisk and a Country of 6 Million 1:26 Passing LVMH — Europe's Most Valuable Company 1:51 Worth More Than Denmark's Entire Economy 2:16 Without Pharma, Denmark Didn't Grow At All 2:35 The Largest Taxpayer — and the Krone Problem 3:10 Who Actually Paid?
