Paul Selig has channeled some of the most widely read spiritual literature of recent decades, and he is unusually clear about what he is not. He is not a spiritual teacher, he says. He takes dictation and shares what he hears. In this conversation he describes what that actually feels like from the inside. He calls himself a medium for the living rather than the dead. He does not talk to those who have crossed very often, though he sometimes reaches people just before they go. As long as someone still has a body, he can tune in through their name and hear or even embody some aspect of them, taking on their mannerisms and expressions. He likens it to an old telephone operator with plug-in cords, able to switch between two people and relay what he hears between them. The gap between Paul Selig the man and what comes through him is not a distance, he suggests, so much as a shift of focus. He lives in a common field of shared information, and moving into the channeled state is as subtle as nudging a radio dial, minute, and suddenly something else is available. It was not always so easy. When he began, he was terrified he would not be able to hear at all, like holding a tin can on a string and hoping someone would speak into the other end. Then one night a guide asked whether they had permission to merge. From that day it has always been present. He is candid about the trap in all of this. In his thirties he was caught up in the specialness of the work and the need to be seen as the one doing it, and he has come to regard that hunger of the personality for self-importance as something to watch closely. He prefers to describe himself as a student who sits in the front row, close enough to the flow to ask questions, and known to interrupt mid-lecture when something contradicts everything he believes.
