Vice President JD Vance was accused of rank hypocrisy Monday over his attack on Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

Speaking at a midterm election rally in Michigan in support of GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers, Vance claimed he had “realized that there’s something about Abdul El-Sayed that is very, very evil and on the rise in the United States of America today.”

According to Vance, “it’s people who see themselves not as citizens of a common nation, fighting for every single person, whether they’re Jewish or Christian, whether they’re white or black or brown, but see themselves as fighting for one group at the expense of others.”

That, he suggested, is how “you destroy the United States of America.”

JD Vance: "When you have people who say 'my ethnic group deserves something, and yours doesn't,' or 'that ethnic group is good and this other ethnic group is bad,' that is how you erode the very foundations of commonality." pic.twitter.com/fAgwbQuHSZ

Vance continued: “When you have people who start to say my ethnic group deserves something and yours doesn’t, or that ethnic group is good and this other ethnic group is bad, that is how you erode the very foundations of commonality and common citizenship that we need to continue to have the United States be the most powerful and prosperous nation anywhere in the world.”

Accusations of hypocrisy, along with blunt reminders of how Vance, Donald Trump and his administration have engaged in exactly the kind of rhetoric the vice president was condemning, quickly followed on X:

They literally do that exact thing everyday!

You mean like: they’re eating the cats and dogs? Or Somalians are “garbage”?? Or.. “if I see a Black pilot I question his credentials” ??? Or Nigerians should go back to their huts”?? @JDVance https://t.co/1TiZRIUxRJ

He is so close to understanding the problem with MAGA politics.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best.

“They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” — Donald Trump https://t.co/O0MlGTieRJ

Someone forgets that (1) Trump falsely claimed that Haitian immigrants were eating cats and dogs and (2) JD Vance laughed about knowing it was a lie. Spare us, please. https://t.co/fKopzDoolO

Which is exactly what Trump is doing

For example: Falsely claiming that Haitian immigrants were eating pets in Ohio to stoke racial animus in an election year.

— Amy Roark (@Todays_Pretty) August 31, 2026

Same guy who admitted to making up stories about Haitian migrants eating cats and dogs in order to win an election. He believes in nothing. https://t.co/h7jy8w3T7x

Wow, the most anti-maga messaging.

— Robert Lusetich (@RobertLusetich) September 1, 2026

This is an odd thing for him to say, given that this administration has a nearly perfect record of only granting asylum to White South African refugees.

— Inner Peas (@innerpeece) August 31, 2026

This administration has only let in white South African refugees

YOU are the guys “eroding the foundations of commonality”
